MY MATERIALS

Paints
I have been using water-mixable oil paints for two years now. The main reason is that I am quite sensitive to the smell of traditional solvents, and since my child is often with me when I paint en plein air, I believe it's healthier to avoid using solvents. I use the Artist-grade lines from reputable and long-established brands, specifically Winsor & Newton Artisan, Holbein DUO, and Cobra by Royal Talens (Rembrandt). These paints offer the same lightfastness and durability as traditional oil paints.
After a period of experimentation and testing, I now confidently take them with me for plein air painting abroad. I am highly satisfied with the ease of use, as I can effortlessly clean my palettes and brushes with just water and soap in my hotel room.

我使用水溶性油畫顏料已經兩年了,主要原因是我對傳統溶劑氣味比較敏感,加上我寫生時我的孩子常會在我身邊,就算是使用無味溶劑我還是會擔心它對人體有不好的影響因此我決定使用水性油畫顏料來避免使用溶劑。我使用的品牌包括:溫莎牛頓的 Artisan、好賓的 DUO,以及林布蘭的 Cobra。這些信譽悠久的品牌所出產的專家級水性油畫顏料,與傳統顏料一樣具有優異的耐光性與持久性。經過一段時間的實驗與嘗試,並帶著它們出國寫生 ,我發現可以在飯店裡輕鬆地用清水和肥皂就清洗我的調色盤和筆,這點讓我非常滿意!
BrushesI use filbert and flat oil brushes made by Rosemary & Co., along with three of their long, fine-tipped Rigger brushes.I own many brushes, but I especially like these because they are very durable—the tips keep their shape well. They also feel perfectly balanced when I hold them.I have many different sizes. When I start a painting, I use the biggest ones first, trying to use a separate brush for each color. This saves a lot of time when I am painting outdoors, which is why I often use about ten brushes of different sizes at once.我使用的油畫筆,是 Rosemary & Co. 製作的平頭和橢圓畫筆 ,其中還包括兩支長而細的 Rigger 描線筆。雖然我擁有非常多的油畫筆,但我發現這些筆特別耐用:筆頭不易變形或磨損,而且使用時在手中有很好的平衡感受。我備有不同尺寸大小的畫筆。寫生時為了節省時間 ,我會盡量讓不同顏色使用不同的筆。因此,我會先從最大的尺寸開始用起,一次使用大約十支左右、粗細大小不一的油畫筆。
PanelsBecause of plein air painting, I prefer to work on linen canvas panels. I also make my own panels by applying three coats of Michael Harding Non-Absorbent Acrylic Primer on a wooden board. I only use water as a solvent for the first foundational layer and it almost dry immediately. After that, I just use pure paint no medium to paint, When close to the end I might use Linseed Oil by Hobein Duo as needed. I found that regular acrylic gesso is too absorbent, and after some experimentation, this particular primer is very suitable for my painting style. 由於寫生的緣故,我偏愛在亞麻畫布畫板上作畫 。我也會自己製作畫板:在木板上塗抹三層 Michael Harding 非吸油性壓克力底漆。我只在打底的第一層使用水作為稀釋劑,而且它幾乎是立刻就乾了。之後,我就只使用純顏料作畫,不加任何媒介劑。快完成時,我可能會視情況使用 Holbein Duo 的亞麻仁油。我發現一般的壓克力底漆吸收性太強,經過嘗試後,這款底漆非常適合我的作畫方式。
Plein Air Pochade BoxI own many pochade plein air painting boxes of different sizes. Currently, I'm using the EZ AIR pochade box from the American brand Artwork Essential. It is lightweight and compact in all aspects, and the palette area is generous enough for me to take it abroad for painting and sightseeing during my travels.

我擁有許多不同尺寸的寫生畫箱 。我發現自己特別喜歡木頭的質感,目前我使用的是美國 Artwork Essential 品牌的 EZ AIR 畫箱。這款畫箱各方面都非常輕巧 ,而且調色區域也不小,完全符合我旅行出國、帶著它到處寫生觀光的需求。


VarnishingI always varnish my works. I usually wait for 3 to 4 months to ensure the oil painting is completely dry before applying varnish . I use Winsor & Newton Artists' Gloss Varnish (for oil colours) to protect my works. 我通常會等 3 到 4 個月,確認油畫完全乾燥後才上凡尼斯 ,使用的是 溫莎牛頓(油彩)藝術家級亮光保護凡尼斯來保護我的作品。
